CHAPTER NINE
HER SHIFT THANKFULLY over after twelve hours, Katy headed to the changing room, grateful to put on real clothes for what seemed like the first time all week. She felt physically and mentally exhausted. Emotionally, too. Today was the anniversary of her fatherâs death. It was the one day of the year she allowed herself to mourn and be sad. The distance between her and Alec added to the heaviness in her chest.
The heaviness had been weighing there since the wedding. Just as the two of them had been about to dance, after theyâd shared a kiss so sweet sheâd nearly melted to the floor, heâd yanked his hand from hers like she was a leper. Told his parents he thought of her as a sister, and the words had felt like heâd jammed his fist in her solar plexus.
The man had kissed her three times, damn it. Wouldnât any woman think that meant he wasnât thinking of her as a âsisterâ? Player or no player, she had to believe Alec didnât kiss every woman he met before turning as cold as the proverbial cucumber and running away. Then again, history had shown she was very capable of deluding herself when it came to Alec Armstrong.
It had been a week since Dr. Boswell had taken over Alecâs teaching rounds. Except for her current weariness, Katy felt like she was really finding her sea legs and not drowning in the hospital undertow. Dr. Boswell had proved to be a good teacher on rounds. Not as good as Alec, of course. But also not as distractingly attractive either.
She figured that had to be a good thing. Her goal was to learn how to be an excellent doctor, and being sidetracked as she noticed other things instead was a hindrance to that.
Noticed, for example, Alecâs amazing bedside manner that engendered trust from even the most difficult patient. Diverted from listening to what patients had to say as he touched them with his long, beautifully shaped surgeonâs hands. Engrossed by the vision of how incredibly sexy he looked in his green scrubs, his muscular chest and athletic tush filling them out in a way that would make any woman practically swoon.
She yanked off her scrub top and pulled on her sundress, thinking of how wonderful Alec had looked in his suit and tie at the wedding, how adorable heâd been, trying to Greek-dance. Heâd seemed so much like the Alec sheâd been getting to know again, teasing and fun and natural, and the memory of their kiss at the hospital had made her insides all warm and gooey. Sheâd felt a little Cinderella-like in her beautiful dress, dancing and eating with an oh-so-handsome prince then kissing him until sheâd been breathless.
Then heâd just walked away, their planned dance apparently forgotten. Angry for deluding herself, sheâd found someone else to dance with.
But then sheâd seen him standing there, watching her. And the look on his face, a peculiar combination of fierceness and
